Tight End Jonnu Smith Released by Steelers After Failing to Reach Final Agreement
Jonnu Smith, the tight end for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has officially been released by the team after failing to reach a contract extension during the offseason. This decision comes as a surprise, considering Smith joined the Steelers last season in a trade from the Miami Dolphins but was unable to replicate his impressive form from his time with Miami.

In the 2025 season, Smith recorded 38 receptions, 222 yards, and 2 touchdowns for the Steelers. He also had 9 rushing attempts for 70 yards, but his performance fell short compared to his career-highs in 2024 with the Dolphins, where he had 88 catches, 884 yards, and 8 touchdowns. His inability to meet the expectations set for him was one of the key reasons behind the Steelers' decision to part ways with him.
With Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington still the primary options at tight end, this made it easier for the Steelers to cut Smith. Although Smith didn’t meet expectations in Pittsburgh, he’s still considered a player with a lot of potential in contributing to an offense, particularly with his abilities to catch and run the ball.
Smith's trade to Pittsburgh last season generated attention, as the Steelers hoped he would provide stability and playmaking for their offense. However, the lack of chemistry with Pittsburgh's offensive system prevented him from fully showing his capabilities. While his time in Pittsburgh was not successful, Smith still has the potential to contribute on other teams, and with his proven talent, he will surely have opportunities ahead.
Smith’s release from the Steelers leaves the team needing to find a replacement at the tight end position. Nevertheless, this decision clearly reflects the Steelers’ direction to maintain a stable and strong roster heading into the next season.
