Superstar Amon-Ra St. Brown Emotionally Bids Farewell to Close Friend David Montgomery – Reveals Final Conversation That Brought Lions Fans to Tears
DETROIT, Michigan — A beautiful chapter of friendship between Amon-Ra St. Brown and David Montgomery with the Detroit Lions has officially come to an end. After the Lions traded Montgomery to the Houston Texans, St. Brown could not hide his emotions. In his latest podcast, he shared his feelings and deep thoughts about his close friend.

“I’m really sad that he has to leave, but I’m also happy for him because I know he’s going to get a bigger role,” St. Brown said. Montgomery informed his teammates before the news went public on social media, which made St. Brown feel respect for him and deeply emotional.
In the final conversation, St. Brown tried to call Montgomery to express his feelings, but he did not get an answer. He understood that Montgomery was likely busy with all the attention from others after the trade news spread. “I called him, but I couldn’t get in touch. I understand though, he probably has a lot of people calling him,” St. Brown shared.
“Thank you, D-Mo, for everything. I wish you all the best in your next journey. Even though you’re not here, you will always be my brother,” St. Brown shared in the podcast, bringing Lions fans to tears. Their friendship and bond had overcome all the challenges throughout their careers.
Montgomery shared his sadness about his reduced workload in the past two seasons, which led him to decide to find a new place where he could showcase his full potential. However, he still had an impressive 2025 season with 8 touchdowns and 4.5 yards per carry.
The trade of Montgomery allows Jahmyr Gibbs to become the starting RB for the Lions. Detroit’s offensive system will now be built around Gibbs, who had an impressive 2025 season with 1,839 yards and 18 touchdowns.
However, the departure of Montgomery has left Lions fans feeling regretful. He was an indispensable part of the team over the years, and losing a player with his qualities and dedication is a big blow. But as St. Brown said, “Everything will be alright, and we’ll keep moving forward.”
