San Francisco 49ers Star RB Announces He Will Not Return Next Season After Emotional Farewell Post on Instagram

San Francisco – Shockwaves moved through the NFL community late Sunday as veteran running back Brian Robinson Jr. appeared to confirm that his time with the San Francisco 49ers is coming to an end. The powerful runner shared an emotional Instagram message that many across the league immediately interpreted as a farewell.

Robinson is set to enter the upcoming free-agency market, and all indications suggest he will not return to San Francisco for the 2026 season. While the situation has not been officially finalized by the organization, league insiders believe the veteran tailback is preparing to explore new opportunities elsewhere.

The 49ers originally acquired Robinson from the Washington Commanders just before the 2025 regular season. At the time, the move was seen as a strategic effort to build a strong one-two backfield combination alongside All-Pro star Christian McCaffrey following McCaffrey’s return from injury.

However, the envisioned tandem never fully materialized. McCaffrey continued to dominate touches within the offense, leaving Robinson with a limited role throughout the season. Despite his physical running style and reliability in key moments, he primarily rotated into the offense and contributed on special teams during his lone year in the Bay Area.

Across 17 games — none of them starts — Robinson posted 400 rushing yards on 92 carries with two touchdowns. He also recorded eight receptions for 25 yards while adding value as a return specialist, logging 13 kick returns for 378 yards. Those numbers represent solid production for a backup running back, though well below his earlier career output.

“All love Niner Gang. Faithful to the Bay.”

The short but meaningful message immediately fueled speculation across social media and NFL circles. For many observers, the tone strongly suggested a goodbye rather than a message hinting at a return, signaling Robinson’s gratitude toward fans while quietly acknowledging the likely end of his San Francisco chapter.

Robinson will turn 27 soon and previously recorded three consecutive 700-yard rushing seasons with Washington, a stretch that established him as a dependable starting-caliber back. With McCaffrey firmly entrenched atop the depth chart and rookie Jordan James emerging late last season, the 49ers may also be ready to move forward with a new backfield structure.

While nothing will become official until the start of the new league year, all signs point toward Robinson wearing a different uniform next season. Wherever he lands, the physical runner is expected to pursue a larger offensive role — and his next destination could reshape the running back market once free agency officially begins.
