REPORT: Medical Concerns Prompt Packers to Renegotiate Jonathan Ford’s Contract
Green Bay, WI – March 12, 2026
The Green Bay Packers are reportedly renegotiating the contract of defensive lineman Jonathan Ford after medical concerns surfaced during his physical examination, prompting a revision to the terms of his deal. Despite these concerns, the Packers still intend to keep the veteran lineman, but a new agreement is being worked out to better reflect the injury risk.
Ford, who returned to the Packers in 2025 after a series of injuries impacted their defensive line, has yet to secure a guaranteed spot on the roster for the 2026 season. After initially being signed as a seventh-round pick by the Packers in 2022, Ford spent time on the Chicago Bears’ practice squad before rejoining Green Bay in the 2025 season. While he didn’t play any regular-season snaps during his first stint, Ford appeared in 30 regular-season snaps and 18 postseason snaps for the Packers in 2025.

Heading into the 2026 offseason, Ford was a restricted free agent, but it was unlikely the Packers would tender him the $3.5 million right of first refusal rate. Instead, a revised one-year deal was anticipated, with the new terms significantly lowering his compensation.
According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, Ford will now earn a $1.145 million non-guaranteed salary for the 2026 season, contingent on making the team and sticking through the regular season. In addition, he received a $100,000 signing bonus and can earn up to $230,000 in per-game active roster bonuses.
As it stands, Ford will join a crowded interior defensive line group, which includes Devonte Wyatt (coming off a fractured fibula and tendon tears), Javon Hargrave, Karl Brooks, Warren Brinson, Jordon Riley (recovering from an Achilles tear), and Nazir Stackhouse. While Ford’s contract provides a financial framework, it does not guarantee him a spot on the team, and the Packers are likely to look to add more players at this position either through free agency or the upcoming draft.
This renegotiation is a direct response to Ford’s medical concerns, ensuring that the contract reflects the risks of his injury history while still allowing the Packers to keep the veteran defender for the 2026 season. As free agency continues, the Packers will likely make additional moves to solidify their defensive line depth for the year ahead.
