The Indianapolis Colts entered this offseason expecting to secure the long-term future of one of the pillars of their defense. Instead, the story has become one of loyalty, sacrifice, and a decision that surprised much of the NFL.
Star defensive end Kwity Paye — a member of the PFWA All-Rookie Team in 2021 — declined a record contract extension from Indianapolis in order to sign with the Las Vegas Raiders for a noticeably lower salary.
The move initially shocked fans and analysts across the league. Paye had developed into one of the most consistent pass rushers in the AFC and was widely viewed as a cornerstone of the Colts’ defensive future.
According to league sources, Indianapolis had prepared a massive four-year extension worth nearly $108 million, a deal that would have made Paye one of the highest-paid edge rushers in franchise history.
Instead, Paye agreed to a three-year contract with the Raiders worth about $66 million, significantly less than what he could have earned by staying in Indianapolis.
Yet the reaction from the Colts community has not been anger.

People close to the situation say a member of Paye’s family is currently undergoing medical treatment in the Las Vegas area, making proximity to family an important factor in his decision. The long distance between Indianapolis and where his relative is receiving treatment made frequent travel difficult, which ultimately influenced Paye to choose the Raiders despite the lower salary.
Paye still emphasized that he will always be grateful for the opportunity Indianapolis gave him.
“Indianapolis believed in me from the very first day I entered this league. I will always be thankful for that. But sometimes in life, family, faith, and personal purpose have to come before the numbers written in a contract.”
Since entering the NFL, Paye has steadily improved his performance, finishing several seasons among the team leaders in sacks, quarterback pressures, and tackles for loss, becoming one of the most reliable edge rushers on the Colts’ defense.
That consistent production is exactly why Indianapolis was eager to secure him with a long-term extension.
But despite the significant financial difference, Paye made it clear that his decision was not a rejection of Indianapolis, but rather a choice shaped by personal circumstances at this stage of his life.
Meanwhile, the Raiders gain a powerful defensive presence as they look to push back into the playoff conversation.
For Colts fans, however, Paye’s departure does not feel like a bitter goodbye.
Instead, it feels like a farewell built on respect.
