Patriots Offensive Superstar Stefon Diggs Confirms Departure After Pay-Cut Request Rejected — Reason Behind Fans’ Anger Over “Betrayal” Revealed

FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts — A short yet emotional chapter between the New England Patriots and offensive star Stefon Diggs is coming to an end. After just one season in New England, Diggs has confirmed that he will leave the team when the new NFL league year begins, closing a relationship that once carried high expectations for both sides.

Stefon Diggs thanks Patriots amid reports of his imminent release

According to multiple sources within the league, the Patriots have informed Diggs that his contract will be terminated next week. The decision stems from salary-cap pressure after the team recently returned to the Super Bowl. The front office was forced to make difficult choices in order to maintain financial flexibility ahead of free agency.

Before reaching the final decision, the Patriots proposed that Diggs restructure his contract in order to reduce the salary-cap burden. Had he accepted, he could have remained the centerpiece of New England’s offense. But the 32-year-old star declined the offer, forcing the team to clear approximately $16.8 million in cap space by releasing him.

During the 2025 season, Diggs still proved his value. He became the most reliable receiving target for young quarterback Drake Maye, recording 85 receptions, 1,013 yards, and four touchdowns. Those contributions helped the Patriots return to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2019.

What makes the situation more controversial is the context before Diggs arrived in New England. Prior to joining the Patriots, he had already been released by three different teams within four years, leading many around the league to question his long-term future in the NFL. Despite that reputation, the Patriots still gave him a new opportunity with a three-year contract worth roughly $69 million.

Because of that history, the reaction from the Patriots fan base has been intense. A portion of supporters believe Diggs turned his back on the very team that helped revive his career. On social media, many fans criticized his decision as a lack of loyalty to the organization that placed its trust in him.

Nevertheless, the situation also reflects the harsh business reality of the NFL. Diggs now enters free agency and is expected to attract interest from several teams looking for a veteran No. 1 wide receiver. Meanwhile, the Patriots must search for a new offensive weapon for the 2026 season after losing the leader of their receiving corps.

Just 12 Hours After Signing Romeo Doubs, GM Eliot Wolf Leverages HC Vrabel’s Connection with A.J. Brown to Set the Stage for the Biggest NFL Trade of 2026, Shaking Up the AFC
A Major Strategic Move by the New England PatriotsJust 12 hours after signing wide receiver Romeo Doubs from the Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots GM Eliot Wolf continued to send a strong message across the entire AFC. While Doubs is an important addition to the roster, the Patriots have not given up on their ambitions to acquire A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles. This move signals the team's determination to reinforce its receiving corps. The Relationship Between HC Vrabel and A.J. BrownThe connection between Brown and head coach Mike Vrabel, who previously coached Brown in Tennessee, is a key factor in this trade. It is known that Vrabel has a significant influence on Brown, and the mutual understanding between them could be the key to bringing this player to New England. This strong bond makes the trade very plausible. The Patriots’ Continued InterestAlthough New England has signed Doubs, the team is not giving up on pursuing Brown. NFL insiders, including Cameron Wolfe from NFL Network, have confirmed that the Patriots are still very much interested in Brown and will continue to pursue him. Signing Doubs does not mean the team is abandoning the pursuit of a high-quality WR1 like Brown. The Dispute Between A.J. Brown and Nick SirianniA.J. Brown has shown dissatisfaction with his role following the Philadelphia Eagles' wild-card loss to the San Francisco 49ers. His conflict with head coach Nick Sirianni has led to speculation that Brown might leave the team this season, fueling rumors about a potential trade. Doubs Strengthens the Roster but Doesn’t Address WR1 NeedsDoubs is seen as a valuable addition to the Patriots’ roster, but he does not fully address the need for a clear WR1. With uncertainty about maintaining offensive strength, acquiring a player like Brown would be a significant boost for New England’s chances of competing strongly in the AFC. Experts Believe a Trade for Brown is "Realistic"Despite Doubs' addition, bringing A.J. Brown to New England is still considered a "realistic" possibility. NFL experts believe that Brown remains a priority for the Patriots, and the team will continue to push for his acquisition, particularly given the strong connection between Brown and Coach Vrabel. The Blockbuster Trade of NFL 2026 Creating a StirThe trade for A.J. Brown to New England could become one of the most talked-about trades of NFL 2026, sending shockwaves through the entire AFC.
