Packers Linked to ‘Very Competitive’ Cornerback to Add Quality Secondary Depth
The Green Bay Packers could look to bolster their secondary in the defensive system of coordinator Jonathan Gannon during next month’s NFL Draft.
Despite not owning a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Green Bay may still have the opportunity to add a legitimate playmaker in the secondary as the team continues working to strengthen its defense.
In Pro Football Focus analyst Max Chadwick’s latest mock draft, the Packers are projected to select Keith Abney II with the No. 52 overall pick in the second round.
Abney, who stands 6 feet tall and weighs 190 pounds, produced 44 total tackles last season along with one sack, two forced fumbles, and two interceptions.
According to an AFC regional scout quoted by Lance Zierlein of NFL Media, Abney has earned a strong reputation within the Arizona State program.
“He’s trusted and well-respected in the building. Very competitive and very smart,” the scout said.
Abney’s competitive mindset and ability to create turnovers could represent an important step toward strengthening the back end of a revamped Packers secondary.
If Green Bay is able to land a playmaker of Abney’s caliber in the second round, it could ultimately prove to be one of the steals of the draft and help accelerate the team’s effort to restore a dominant defensive unit.
