New England Star TE Informs Patriots He Will Not Return Next Season
The New England Patriots appear set to lose one of their reliable veteran tight ends as the offseason approaches.
According to sources around the league, the veteran tight end has informed people close to the organization that he does not expect to return to New England once the new league year begins.
The situation stems largely from stalled contract negotiations. With the Patriots currently dealing with salary-cap considerations—despite having significant space—and multiple roster priorities heading into free agency, talks between the team and the veteran tight end failed to produce a new agreement.
That player is Austin Hooper, whose one-year deal with New England will officially expire when the NFL’s new league year begins on March 11.

Despite the short stint in his second year with the team, Hooper made a noticeable impact during his time in Foxborough.
In 16 games with the Patriots, he produced solid numbers in a complementary role. The veteran recorded 21 receptions on 26 targets for 263 yards and 2 touchdowns, with an average of 12.5 yards per catch—highlighting his effectiveness as a reliable red-zone target and veteran presence behind Hunter Henry.
Even with that production, New England's desire to get younger at the position—particularly with Hunter Henry, 31, locked in as TE1—has complicated any attempt to retain him long-term. The team is navigating roster adjustments and could prioritize developmental talent or upgrades in a position group they aim to refresh.
The veteran tight end has already drawn interest from multiple teams as free agency approaches.
During recent discussions, Hooper has been linked to squads seeking experienced depth at tight end. Teams such as the Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders, Atlanta Falcons, and others are believed to be monitoring his situation and could pursue the two-time Pro Bowler once the legal tampering period begins.
For the Patriots, his expected departure represents another significant roster decision in an offseason already shaped by salary-cap management and building for the future.
Unless something changes dramatically before free agency opens, it now appears that Austin Hooper’s time in New England is coming to an end.
