Matt LaFleur Uses NFL’s Legal Tampering Window to Call Five Free Agents to Fill Packers Roster Gaps

Green Bay, Wisconsin – 9/3/2026

The opening of the NFL’s legal tampering window has given teams a new recruiting tool this offseason.

Under the updated rule, franchises can conduct direct one-hour video or phone conversations with up to five free agents before the new league year officially begins.

For the Green Bay Packers, head coach Matt LaFleur reportedly wasted little time taking advantage of that opportunity.

With several roster weaknesses still evident after the 2025 season, LaFleur focused his early outreach on players who could strengthen both the defensive front and the offensive protection around franchise quarterback Jordan Love.

Sources indicate the Packers targeted five players who could address some of the team’s most pressing needs.

Boye Mafe (EDGE – Seattle Seahawks)
LaFleur’s first call reportedly went to Boye Mafe of the Seattle Seahawks. The Packers are searching for additional help along the edge, and Mafe has emerged as one of the more intriguing pass-rush options on the market.

Although he finished last season with just two sacks, the raw numbers do not fully capture his impact. Seattle’s defensive rotation limited his opportunities, yet Mafe posted a 17.4% pass-rush win rate, higher than any edge defender currently on Green Bay’s roster.

His explosiveness and athletic profile could bring much-needed pressure off the edge.

Wyatt Teller (Guard – Cleveland Browns)
Protecting Jordan Love has become a priority in Green Bay. While the offense showed strong development in 2025, the Packers are still looking to solidify the interior offensive line.

That is why LaFleur reportedly reached out to Wyatt Teller of the Cleveland Browns. Widely regarded as one of the most physical interior linemen in the league, Teller could immediately stabilize the guard position while bringing veteran leadership to the offensive line.

Jaelan Phillips (EDGE – Philadelphia Eagles)
Another defensive target is Jaelan Phillips of the Philadelphia Eagles. After missing out on several high-profile defensive line options earlier in the offseason, Green Bay remains determined to add a difference-maker to its pass rush.

Phillips fits that profile perfectly. The dynamic young edge rusher is entering the prime of his career and possesses the type of disruptive ability the Packers would value along their defensive front.

Alec Pierce (Wide Receiver – Indianapolis Colts)
On offense, the Packers are exploring ways to expand their vertical passing attack for Jordan Love. One player who could help accomplish that is deep-threat receiver Alec Pierce from the Indianapolis Colts.

Pierce’s speed and ability to stretch defenses downfield could add another dimension to Green Bay’s receiving corps. More importantly, he represents a cost-effective option compared to some of the elite receivers on the market while still providing explosive playmaking ability.

Alijah Vera-Tucker (Guard/Tackle – New York Jets)
The final reported call went to versatile offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker of the New York Jets. LaFleur values positional flexibility, and Vera-Tucker offers exactly that.

Capable of playing both guard and tackle, he could provide critical depth across the offensive line while potentially stepping into a larger role if injuries strike during the season.

With the legal tampering window now open, the Packers have already begun laying the groundwork for what could become a pivotal offseason. By targeting players who address clear roster needs, Matt LaFleur appears determined to strengthen Green Bay’s roster and continue building a competitive team around Jordan Love heading into the 2026 season.

Packers Superstar Jordan Love Faces Boycott After Claiming Children Shouldn’t Be Exposed to LGBTQ-Themed Cartoons, Despite Explaining He Meant No Hostility Toward Anyone
Green Bay, Wisconsin – Jordan Love, the star quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, sparked a major controversy after stating that children should not be exposed to LGBTQ-themed cartoons. These comments quickly spread on social media, generating a wave of strong reactions. "My point is not to attack anyone, but to express concern about the natural development of children," Love shared while explaining his stance. He emphasized that children should be allowed to develop their identities without being overly influenced by complex topics.
