Just two days before the free agency window opens, the Patriots create a “hit” by successfully signing one of the NFL’s top veteran defensive linemen to a three-year contract
Foxborough, Massachusetts – In a move that signals urgency and ambition ahead of the NFL free-agency frenzy, the New England Patriots have successfully secured one of the league’s most experienced defensive linemen just two days before the market officially opens. By moving early, the organization demonstrated its determination to strengthen the roster before competitors even had the chance to negotiate.
The agreement comes as the NFL’s legal tampering window begins, allowing teams to contact pending free agents and discuss potential contracts. According to Ian Rapoport, the Patriots reached a deal with veteran defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones worth three years and $39.5 million, securing a player many analysts expected to draw heavy interest.

Jones’ path to free agency included a busy and productive 2025 season. He began the year with the Tennessee Titans before being traded to the Baltimore Ravens in November. Baltimore later reshaped its defensive front after acquiring star pass rusher Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders, making Jones expendable.
Despite the mid-season move, Jones delivered one of the strongest performances of his career in 2025. Across his time with both teams, he recorded seven sacks and 24 quarterback hits, both career highs. His ability to generate interior pressure and disrupt passing lanes elevated him into one of the more intriguing pass-rush options entering the offseason market.
For New England, the signing represents more than just adding depth along the defensive front. The Patriots struggled at times to consistently pressure opposing quarterbacks late last season, and Jones brings proven explosiveness to the defensive line. His versatility allows him to play multiple alignments, making him an ideal piece for evolving defensive schemes.
Head coach Mike Vrabel believes the veteran lineman brings the exact qualities the Patriots need moving forward. “Dre’Mont brings relentless energy, toughness, and a natural instinct for attacking the quarterback. He’s the kind of player who changes the tone of a defense. Our fans will love the way he competes every snap and the pressure he creates.”
With free agency only beginning to unfold, the Patriots’ early move could prove to be one of the smartest of the offseason. By securing a proven pass rusher before the bidding intensified, New England strengthened its defensive identity and sent a message across the league that the franchise intends to compete aggressively in the seasons ahead.
