Former Third-Round Safety With 322 Tackles Agrees to Sign With Commanders After Three Failed Negotiation Attempts With Colts GM Chris Ballard
Nick Cross, the former safety for the Indianapolis Colts, has agreed to a contract with the Washington Commanders after three unsuccessful negotiation attempts with Colts GM Chris Ballard. Cross, selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, had a promising career with the Colts and will now continue his journey with a new team.

Over his three seasons with the Colts, Cross recorded 322 tackles, establishing himself as one of the top safeties on the team. However, after the 2025 season, the contract negotiations between Cross and Ballard did not reach an agreement, leading Cross to seek new opportunities with Washington.

In 2024, Cross had a breakout year, recording 146 tackles, ranking 9th in the NFL for total tackles, and establishing himself as one of the league’s best safeties. Additionally, he contributed with 6 tackles for loss, 1 sack, and 3 interceptions, helping his team secure key victories. The following season, Cross maintained his consistency with 120 tackles, ranking 27th in the NFL, and leading all safeties in sacks.
“My heart will always belong to the Colts, but after three failed negotiations, I realized I no longer had a place there. Leaving might be the right step. Washington came in, and they know who I am. I’ll prove they’re not wrong in trusting me. This will be a revolution for me and the new team.”
With a two-year, $14 million contract with the Washington Commanders, Cross will now have the chance to showcase his talents in a new defensive system. This move is expected to bring fresh energy to both Cross and the team, allowing him to continue developing and make an impact in the 2026 season.
Cross’s impressive stats not only solidified his place with the Colts but also caught the attention of other teams. While he may not have been the flashiest star, he consistently delivered solid and effective play in every aspect of the game.
With a fresh start in Washington, Cross will have the perfect opportunity to prove his worth. This addition not only strengthens Washington’s defensive lineup but also marks a major turning point in Cross’s career as he aims to continue playing at a high level and prove that he deserves both the trust and a well-deserved payday.
