Former Third-Round Draft Pick (Pick 92) by Steelers Signs with New York Jets, Rejects Pittsburgh's Offer: Fans Believe It’s a Revenge Move
March 13, 2026
New York, NY – Offensive tackle Chuks Okorafor has officially signed with the New York Jets, turning down an offer from the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team he spent the majority of his career with. This move has sparked speculation among Steelers fans, with many believing that Okorafor’s decision to leave the team could be a form of revenge for his release earlier this year.
Okorafor, who was drafted by the Steelers in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft (pick 92 overall) from Western Michigan University, had a solid career in Pittsburgh, starting as a backup offensive tackle before solidifying his role as the starting right tackle in 2020. He played in 92 games with the Steelers, starting 60 of them, and was known for his durability, playing nearly every offensive snap in recent seasons. His performance earned him a three-year extension worth $29.25 million, with $9.25 million guaranteed, signed in March 2022.
However, his time in Pittsburgh came to an abrupt end when the Steelers released him on February 20, 2024. The move, which was made to clear $8.75 million in cap space for the team, came as part of the Steelers’ plan to refresh their offensive line. Despite Okorafor’s consistent performance, the Steelers opted to move on, leaving many fans surprised and upset by the decision. Okorafor had been a reliable player for Pittsburgh, having played in 92 career games and started in 60 of them, without allowing any notable sacks or fumbles.
Chuks Okorafor’s Bold Statement
In an emotional interview, Okorafor opened up about his decision to leave Pittsburgh and sign with the Jets. “I’ve always loved the Steelers, but when I agreed to take a pay cut to stay in August, GM Omar Khan told me I no longer fit into the team’s long-term strategy,” Okorafor said. “Now, I want to go somewhere where my value is recognized appropriately. I’m looking for a fresh start, a place where I can contribute and show what I still have left in the tank.”
His comments have raised eyebrows among fans, many of whom believe Okorafor’s move to the Jets is a form of retaliation for being released by the Steelers. Given his importance to the team in recent seasons, many fans feel betrayed by the decision, and Okorafor’s new contract with a rival AFC team is seen as a way to send a message to Pittsburgh management.
Okorafor’s Journey to the Jets
After his release from the Steelers, Okorafor had a brief stint with the New England Patriots before being released again. He was eventually signed by the Jets in March 2025 on a one-year deal. Though he played in 14 games during the 2025 season, Okorafor was primarily a depth player and contributed mainly on special teams, with no starts during the season. Despite limited playing time, Okorafor’s experience and versatility were enough for the Jets to re-sign him for another year on March 13, 2026, with a reported value of $1.337 million, including $757.5K guaranteed. His new role will be as a backup swing tackle, providing depth and flexibility on the Jets' offensive line.
Looking Ahead
For the Jets, Okorafor provides valuable depth to their offensive line as they continue to build for the future. However, for Steelers fans, his departure leaves a bitter taste, especially considering his importance to the team’s success in recent years. While the Steelers move forward with a younger offensive line, Okorafor’s story serves as a reminder of the often-painful business decisions that shape NFL rosters.
As the 2026 season approaches, all eyes will be on Okorafor and the Jets to see how he can contribute in his new role. For Okorafor, it’s a fresh start with a new team, one that will allow him to prove that he still has much to offer the NFL.
