Former Texans Star Says He’ll Always Be Part of Houston — Hopes to Retire as a Texan One Day
Houston, Texas – 9/3/2026
Even though he and the Houston Texans were unable to reach a path forward this offseason, former running back Joe Mixon made it clear that his connection to Houston remains strong.
The Texans officially released Mixon on March 6 as part of a series of salary-cap moves ahead of the new NFL league year, which begins March 11. The decision is expected to save the organization roughly $8 million in cap space as the team prepares for the next phase of roster construction.
Despite the business side of the move, Mixon spoke emotionally about his time in Houston and the impact the organization had on him.
“Houston will always mean something special to me. Even if I’m not wearing the uniform anymore, I’ll always feel like a Texan.”
Mixon’s time with Houston was unfortunately cut short after he missed the entire 2025 season due to a serious leg injury. The absence made it difficult for both sides to find a financial solution that worked for the team’s cap situation heading into 2026.
Still, the veteran running back made it clear that there is no resentment toward the franchise.
“The Texans gave me an opportunity and believed in me. I’ll always be grateful for that.”
Houston had already begun adjusting its roster earlier in the week when the team released veteran safety Jimmie Ward on March 4, a move that saved roughly $750,000 in cap space. Together, those decisions reflect the Texans’ effort to remain financially flexible before free agency officially begins.
For Mixon, however, the emotional ties to Houston remain far stronger than the business realities of the NFL.
“If the day ever comes when I’m ready to retire, I would love to sign one last contract and finish my career in Houston.”
While Mixon now prepares for the next chapter of his career, his message left little doubt about how he views his time with the Texans.
For Joe Mixon, Houston will always feel like home.
