“Could you do your job”: Big Ben calls out Omar Khan over Steelers GM’s failure in locking down key position
PITTSBURGH — Former Pittsburgh Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger didn’t hold back this week when discussing the team’s ongoing quarterback uncertainty, delivering a blunt message that has quickly ignited debate across the NFL community.
Speaking on a recent podcast appearance, the two-time Super Bowl champion questioned the Steelers’ front office strategy and openly challenged general manager Omar Khan over what he described as a failure to secure stability at the most important position in football.

“Could you do your job?” Roethlisberger said while discussing the situation. “Because the quarterback position — that’s the one thing you have to get right.”
The comments immediately drew attention from fans and analysts, many of whom have been asking similar questions about the direction of the Steelers’ offense since Roethlisberger retired following the 2021 season.
For decades, Pittsburgh built its identity around long-term stability under center. From Terry Bradshaw to Roethlisberger himself, the franchise rarely experienced prolonged uncertainty at quarterback. But in the seasons since Big Ben stepped away, the Steelers have struggled to establish a clear long-term answer.
Roethlisberger acknowledged that building a roster in today’s NFL is complicated, especially with salary cap pressures and a competitive AFC landscape. Still, he believes securing the quarterback position must remain the top priority for any front office.
“You can build a great defense. You can have talented receivers,” Roethlisberger explained. “But if you don’t know who your quarterback is going to be for the next five or ten years, it’s hard to build everything else around that.”
His comments were widely interpreted as a direct challenge to Omar Khan, who took over as Steelers GM and has been tasked with guiding the team into its next era.
Despite the criticism, Roethlisberger made it clear his remarks come from a place of passion for the organization that defined his career.
“I love the Steelers,” he said. “I want to see them win again. That’s why this matters.”
Inside the Steelers organization, there has been no official response to Roethlisberger’s comments. However, league insiders say the team remains committed to evaluating all options as it prepares for the upcoming season and future drafts.
For Pittsburgh fans, Roethlisberger’s words echoed a sentiment that has grown louder in recent years: the Steelers must find their next franchise quarterback.
Until that happens, the questions surrounding the team’s long-term direction will continue — and voices like Big Ben’s will only amplify the urgency.
