Bills Shock Move: DJ Moore Agrees to Contract Restructure, Saving $17.8M in Cap Space

Buffalo, NY. In a move that caught many around the league by surprise, the Buffalo Bills received a major financial boost during the early stages of free agency.
A newly arrived star wide receiver has already stepped forward to help the team create room for future roster upgrades.
The Bills had been navigating a tight salary cap situation after several offseason moves.
With the franchise still hoping to strengthen key areas of the roster, particularly on defense, the front office needed a creative solution to generate additional financial flexibility.
That solution came from DJ Moore. The recently acquired receiver agreed to restructure his contract, allowing the team to significantly lower his 2026 salary cap hit while maintaining the overall value of the deal.
Under the original structure, Moore carried a 2026 cap hit of approximately $24.5 million. The restructuring converts $17.8 million of his base salary into a signing bonus, which can then be spread evenly across the remaining years of the contract for salary cap purposes.
Because signing bonuses are prorated, that $17.8 million is distributed across multiple seasons rather than counting fully in 2026.
As a result, Moore’s 2026 cap hit drops dramatically, creating roughly $17.8 million in immediate cap space for Buffalo.
“This is about winning,” Moore reportedly told people close to the situation. “When you join a team with a quarterback like Josh Allen and a locker room chasing a Super Bowl, you want to do everything possible to help the team compete.”
The restructure gives Buffalo the financial flexibility needed to remain aggressive in free agency. One player frequently linked to the team is elite pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, whose market value could approach the high-$20 million range annually.
For general manager Brandon Beane, the move represents a classic salary cap strategy used by contenders. By pushing some cap charges into future seasons, the team gains immediate space to pursue impact talent while keeping its core intact.
Perhaps most significant is the message behind the decision. Moore has yet to take a regular-season snap for Buffalo, but his willingness to restructure immediately signals commitment to the franchise’s championship window alongside quarterback Josh Allen.
With free agency still unfolding, the Bills now have the flexibility to make a major move. And thanks to one contract adjustment, Buffalo’s path toward another Super Bowl push suddenly looks far more realistic.
