Although no agreement was reached with the team, former Lions star Taylor Decker affirmed that he will always be a member of the Lions — and hopes that one day he will retire in Detroit.
Detroit, Michigan – 9/3/2026
Even though he and the Detroit Lions could not reach a new contract agreement this offseason, longtime offensive lineman Taylor Decker made it clear that his connection to Detroit remains unbreakable.
Decker, who was officially released by the Lions on March 6 after requesting his release following stalled contract negotiations, reflected on what the organization has meant to him throughout his career.
“Detroit will always mean everything to me. No matter where football takes me next, I’ll always feel like a Lion.”
The veteran left tackle spent nearly a decade protecting the edge of Detroit’s offensive line after being selected in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Over the years, Decker became one of the most respected leaders in the locker room and a cornerstone of the team’s offensive line.
His tenure coincided with a major transformation of the franchise, as the Lions rebuilt their identity and eventually developed one of the league’s most physical and balanced offenses.
Decker was widely praised for his durability, leadership, and consistency, anchoring the blindside while helping establish Detroit as one of the NFL’s strongest offensive lines during the team’s competitive resurgence.
Despite his departure coming after contract talks broke down — largely due to disagreements surrounding a potential pay reduction — Decker emphasized that there is no bitterness toward the organization that drafted him.
“This city believed in me from day one. The fans, the coaches, my teammates — they made Detroit home for my family and me.”
The veteran lineman also shared a dream that many longtime players hold when leaving the team where their careers began.
“When my career is finally over, I hope I can come back one day and retire wearing a Lions jersey. That would mean the world to me.”
For Lions fans, Decker’s message served as a reminder that while business decisions often shape the NFL offseason, the emotional bond between a player and a franchise can last far longer than any contract.
And for Taylor Decker, Detroit will always be home.
