49ers Front Office Makes Final Decision as Team Takes Latest Step to Protect QB Brock Purdy
Santa Clara – As the NFL offseason begins to heat up, the San Francisco 49ers have made an important decision directly tied to the future of quarterback Brock Purdy. The team’s front office is reportedly adding another voice to the offensive coaching staff in a move aimed at improving the offensive line and ensuring Purdy has better protection heading into next season.
According to multiple reports, Angel Matute is expected to join the 49ers’ offensive coaching staff after making a strong impression as the offensive line coach at Kent State. During his most recent season there, Matute helped significantly reduce sacks allowed while improving the team’s running game efficiency—two areas the 49ers are eager to strengthen.

The move is seen as a strategic step by San Francisco after a season in which Brock Purdy faced consistent pressure from opposing defenses. Last year, the 49ers allowed 27 sacks, with Purdy taking 11 of them before suffering an injury that forced him to miss a significant portion of the season.
During Purdy’s absence, Mac Jones stepped in as the team’s backup quarterback. However, the offensive line issues persisted, as Jones was sacked 16 times in just eight games, highlighting the need for improvement in pass protection across the board.

The problems up front didn’t just affect the passing attack. They also made life more difficult for the 49ers’ running game. While Christian McCaffrey still managed to surpass 1,000 rushing yards, his average of 3.9 yards per carry suggested that the team’s blocking scheme was not operating at its full potential.
That is why bringing Matute onto the coaching staff is viewed as part of a larger plan to rebuild and strengthen the 49ers’ offensive line. The organization is also reportedly exploring additional options at center and guard in the upcoming free agency period to further stabilize the unit.
Another key storyline this offseason will be the future of Trent Williams, one of the NFL’s premier offensive tackles. Williams has one year remaining on his current contract, and the 49ers could look to extend him in order to maintain stability on the blind side protecting Purdy.
With divisional rivals like the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams boasting dangerous defensive fronts in the NFC West, improving the offensive line has quickly become a top priority for San Francisco.
If the plan works as intended, the 49ers’ latest move could prove critical in giving Brock Purdy more time in the pocket while helping Kyle Shanahan’s offense return to the explosive form that made the team one of the most dangerous units in the NFL.
